An Ethical Coffee Cup: Fair Trade & The Rainforest Alliance

Here at Office Barista we care very much about Fair trade and sustainability and we know its important to our customers that their favourite coffee cup is as ethically sourced as possible. We endeavour to ensure most of our coffee and teas for office coffee machines are either Fair Trade or Rainforest Alliance certified.

Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance certifications are important it helps customers be assured that they are buying ethically produced products wherever possible.

Fair Trade is very recognisable by consumers and ensures that farmers in the developing world are paid a fair price for their crops. *The Mark means that the  ingredients in the product have been produced by small-scale farmer organisations or plantations that meet  social, economic and environmental standards. The standards include protection of workers’ rights and the environment, payment of the Fairtrade Minimum Price and an additional Fairtrade Premium to invest in business or community projects.

The farmers and workers themselves decide how the Premium should be invested. The premium is the additional sum of money paid on top of the  minimum price that farmers and workers receive which can be invested in social, environmental and economic developmental projects to improve their businesses and their communities. In real terms, it means investment in schools, transport, health care, sanitation, an improved environment and better business equipment and practices.

Fairtrade works to benefit small-scale farmers and workers, who are amongst the most marginalised groups globally, through trade rather than aid to enable them to maintain their livelihoods and reach their potential.

Fairtrade is 50% owned by farmers and workers

Fairtrade works with a range of stakeholders but our global system is 50% owned by producers representing farmer and worker organisations.

With an equal voice, producers have a say in decision-making within our General Assembly and on Fairtrade International’s Board of Directors. Through the Board and its committees, they are involved in decisions on overall strategy, use of resources and setting prices, premiums and standards.

For most Fairtrade goods there is a minimum price which is set to cover the cost of sustainable production for that product in that region. If the market price for that product is higher that our minimum price, then farmers and workers should receive the market price.

The Rain Forest Alliance works to improve sustainability and conserve biodiversity. **The Rainforest Alliance’s ambitious mission is to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices, and consumer behavior.

The Rainforest Alliance’s work is guided by our understanding that the health of the Earth is linked to the well-being of those whose livelihoods depend on the land and forests. As everyone has a vital role to play in strengthening this relationship, they provide training to farmers and foresters, work with businesses committed to sustainability, and motivate citizens to adopt sustainable lifestyles.

From their earliest days in the tropics of Central America, they've grown their alliance by partnering with forest and farming communities, governments, and companies to conserve critically important forests and cultivate sustainable livelihoods. Today, they conduct training, certification, and verification in 78 countries around the world.
